What's at Stake with Relicensing …

As Appalachian Power submits it License Proposal to operate the Smith Mountain Project (the two dams, Smith Mountain Lake, and Leesville Lake), we seek to protect water quality and water levels; slow the rate of sediment deposition and shoreline erosion; better manage the removal and disposal of floating debris; improve lake safety; bring our navigation system into compliance; enhance access and recreational opportunities; enhance fisheries; control invasive aquatic vegetation; preserve key scenic attributes; and balance the cost of project stewardship fairly between citizens and the project's owner and operator, Appalachian Power (APCo).
